Welcome to the team Spence Weitzen!
GrowTorah is extremely excited to welcome our newest full-time member to the team! Spence joins us in the role of Garden Educator. In this role, he’ll be teaching several times a week in GrowTorah gardens at our Shorashim partner schools around NYC and Northern NJ.
Spence loves to learn and teach Torah. He holds a Masters in Jewish Education from YU’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education, and he has taught both indoors and outdoors at several yeshiva day schools in the area, as well as at several Jewish summer camps.
“This position truly excites me as it allows me to take the next step in my passion for teaching Jewish youth. I believe that as educators we are sometimes limited by the confines of the classroom. In a setting such as this, we have the potential to inspire students in a completely different way. (And after seeing GrowTorah in action, I have seen its effect!) I have always found religious comfort in the notion that there is such similar order and structure in the natural world as there is in our spiritual experiences. I would love to unlock these lessons for the future generations of Klal Yisra'el.”
Spence lives in NJ with his wife, and three children. His favorite vegetables are yellow and orange bell peppers. His favorite person in Tanakh is Yosef because of his strong moral compass. One of his best purim costumes was recycling a cardboard box to dress up as an OtterBox. Spence is also a big Disney parks enthusiast and particularly enjoyed his time at the greenhouse at Epcot.
